The holiday season is upon us, and for may divers in colder parts of the world, that means they’ve likely hung up their wetsuits for the year. However, that doesn’t mean that they won’t spend the next several months in a state of depression as they wait for the water temps to get comfortable enough to dive again! You can help stave off some of that depression by getting the favorite diver in your life one (or all!) of the hot items on this holiday scuba gift list.
If the diver in your life hasn’t yet gotten into underwater photography, it’s really just a matter of time. Get them started out the right way with a really solid, yet affordable underwater camera. The Canon PowerShot D30 fits the bill for such a need quite nicely. It’s extremely easy to use, so you don’t need to be an expert to get started. It’s waterproof down to 25m, which should be plenty for most sport divers. Plus, it’s less than $500 so it won’t break the bank.
Fins are a pretty personal thing for a diver, and while they’ll likely pick up a favorite pair and stick with them for a while, it always helps to have a go-to backup pair, especially if the diver in your life does a lot of traveling. The Aqua Lung Hot Shot fins are an excellent choice for several reasons. They’re not big and bulky (unlike the hideous fins you’ll have to rent at most destination tour shops). Because of their small size, you can easily fit these fins in a piece of carry-on luggage.
Sadly, your favorite diver likely won’t be able to hit the water every day this winter. For those chilly afternoons where you’re housebound, a good coffee table book is a perfect companion. There are plenty of great books on the market, but our top pick goes to Dive Atlas of the World: An Illustrated Reference to the Best Sites by Jack Jackson. It will literally help you plan your next diving adventure, no matter where in the world you want to go.
