The car culture is as big as ever thanks to reality TV shows like Fast and Loud and the Motortrend network. Even NASCAR is making a bit of a comeback after several years of a dwindling fanbase. While reality shows and live races are a great way to get your car-related entertainment, we occasionally need a little more storyline or some over-the-top stunts to go along with our cars, right? That’s where a good car racing movie comes in, and here are a few of our favorites.
Drive is a 2011 film starring Ryan Gosling and was directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. While it’s not exactly a “racing” movie, it does feature some awesome chase scenes as Gosling’s character, a getaway driver for crooks, moonlights as a Hollywood stunt driver. As you might imagine, you’ll find no shortage of fast and unbelievable car stunts in this film.
Arguably in the top 3 greatest “car flicks” ever, Vanishing Point is the 1971 film about a Vietnam veteran who has become a driver for hire. He’s also picked up some bad habits after his return from the war. He’s hired to drive a very sweet Dodge Challenger from Colorado to California nad his friend bets him that he can’t make the trip in under 15 hours. Eventually, the police and a radio DJ catch wind, and soon Kowalski’s road trip is a national event.
1968’s Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen, has what many believe to be the greatest car chase scene ever filmed. The overall plot is an entertaining spin on trying to protect a high-profile witness and catch the guys responsible for attempting to harm him. While McQueen’s portrayal of the fashionable police officer Frank Bullitt is entertaining in itself, it’s the film’s epic chase between a 1968 Mustang GT and 1968 Dodge Charger that has cemented the film into the list of greatest car flicks ever made.
The Fast and the Furious
It’s hard to believe that the first Fast and the Furious film was released in 2001, but there’s no denying that it’s one of the best car racing films ever made. It really helped put the car flick back on the map, and thanks to an incredible franchise, we’ve been given seven sequels and no signs of the franchise coming to an end. If you’re looking for awesome car racing, stunts, and ridiculous (but no less entertaining) plots, any one of the F&F movies will fit the bill.
