There are plenty of amazing rock climbing destinations around the world. In fact, even if you devoted your existence to climbing them all, it’s unlikely you’d be able to check off every single spot. However, there’s no harm in trying. To get you started, here are 5 excellent rock climbing destinations you should visit this summer.
Yosemite National Park
Not surprising, Yosemite will be a hot spot this summer for rock climbing. While the legendary Half Dome and El Capitan will provide perhaps the largest feathers in your cap, there are plenty of other routes and bouldering opportunities to conquer if you’re not up to big wall climbing just yet.
Smith Rock State Park, Oregon
About two hours outside of Portland lies the town of Terrebonne, home to Smith Rock State Park. The park offers almost countless climbing opportunities, with routes for climbers of all skill levels. Visitors can camp in the park, and for those that elect not to climb, there are plenty of other activities like kayaking, hiking and helicopter tours.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Rock climbing probably isn’t the first thing you think about when you think of Las Vegas, but leave the city in just about any direction and go only a few miles and you’ll find a ton of excellent rock climbing opportunities. Red Rock Canyon is one of the more notable, and if you don’t want to worry about putting on the sunscreen, you can always hit up the Red Rock Climbing Center for some stellar indoor action.
Tucson is a perfect climbing destination, year-round. A short drive out of the city will grant you access to notable routes in Tanque Verde Canyon, Mendoza Canyon, Mount Lemmon, Cochise Stronghold and Baboquivari Peak. The Santa Catalina Mountains at Mt. Lemmon alone offer 2,700 different routes, making this area one of the best summer climbing destinations on the planet.
Washington State is a great summer climbing destination and Leavenworth is the center of the action. It’s a great spot for beginning climbers, with plenty of climbing schools and tour providers in the area.
